Comprenew is certified to the highest international standards in electronics recycling
e-Stewards Standards for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment ®: Version 2: e-Stewards
Established by the Basel Action Network (BAN) in 2009, e-Stewards is an electronics waste recycling standard inspired by the 1989 United Nations Basel Convention banning the exportation of electronic waste to developing countries. E-Stewards emphasizes end-of-life materials handling of e-waste, the prohibition of hazardous electronic waste exportation, and the use of child and prison labor in materials recovery. Currently, there are only 63 e-Stewards certified electronics recyclers in the world.
R2- Responsible Recycling© : 2013 for Data Security, Recycling and Reuse, Refurbishment of Electronics: R2
The Responsible Recycling (R2) standard was developed by a group of recycling stakeholders at the behest of the EPA. Administered by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), R2 emphasizes protection of natural resources through pollution prevention, extending the life of electronics as a means to reducing e-waste, and data security and privacy. R2 was established to ensure electronics recyclers are compliant with the EPA’s e-waste regulations. There are 672 electronics recyclers currently certified by R2 worldwide.
While there is considerable overlap between these two certification standards, e-Stewards & R2 have differences in emphasis on exports and extending the lifecycle of electronics. Being certified by both demonstrates a commitment to meeting the highest standards of environmental, social and data protection.
Comprenew is the only nonprofit in the world, and the only electronic recycler in Michigan, certified by both e-Stewards and R2.
