Batteries being disposed of in recycling center

Battery Recycling and Disposition

Cadmium, mercury, lead, and lithium are just a few of the toxic chemicals that can leach into soil and groundwater systems when batteries are improperly disposed. Comprenew accepts batteries. And we make it easy to do the right thing.

Alkaline batteries are traditional single-use batteries that are chemically more benign that other battery types. On the other hand, rechargeable batteries fall into many different categories – lithium, lithium-ion, NiMH, NiCD, and lead-acid to name a few. The disposal of these battery types is more regulated, and many states and localities have banned these from being landfilled.

It’s best that different types of used batteries not be stored together. You can help us by sorting batteries before you drop them off.  Further, it’s best that the positive and negative terminals of non-alkaline batteries be wrapped in clear packing tape to prevent the battery terminals from rubbing with other metals and creating a spark during storage and transport.

Our team of experts at Comprenew know exactly how safely store batteries so if you are ever in doubt, please ask.

Take your batteries to one of our drop-off locations—or click to schedule a pick up.

In most cases, it costs more to handle and recycle batteries than the value of any materials that can be recovered. There are significant savings for our corporate customers that do their own sorting and we can help. Please call 833-COMPRENEW for a quote.

In fact, Comprenew is the only e-Stewards-certified recycler in Michigan, and the only non-profit electronic recycler in the world that is both R2 and e-Stewards certified.

Among other things, Comprenew’s e-Steward certification requires us to:

Our Comprenew’s R2 certification requires us to:

  • Prioritize electronics refurbishment whenever possible
  • Properly destroy all sensitive data
