Good and bad news from our pals at MDOT:

First the bad – you’re not going to get to Comprenew at 629 Ionia Ave SW from 131 and Franklin for awhile.

Comprenew wins 2011 MRC Excellence Award

The Steering Committee for the Michigan Rehabilitation Conference has selected Comprenew to receive the 2011 MRC Excellence Award at the conference this year. Upon review of the nomination submitted by Gloria McMullan of Hope Network, supported by Lynda Sweigart of Hope Network, along with Karen Awe of Michigan Rehabilitation Services, the Committee agreed that Comprenew has demonstrated excellence in leadership and commitment on behalf of persons with disabilities, and significant impact on the service delivery system, was consistent with the criteria established for this award.

The MRC Excellence Awards were presented during the Opening Keynote Address & Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, October 26 at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. Kyle Shoemaker, Operations Director at Comprenew, accepted this award at the conference on behalf of the Comprenew team. Mr. Shoemaker has been a significant leader in running this program that teaches individuals to build self-awareness and their employability skills. The Steering Committee of the Michigan Rehabilitation Conference extended its congratulations to Mr. Shoemaker and Comprenew on this important accomplishment.

Want to win a laptop? Keep an eye out for a Comprenew electronics collection event, bring in your electronics recycling, and you could be eligible to win a personal computer or laptop! Last Saturday, at the Rockford Community Expo, that’s what Dave Card did. Within a few days, Dave owned a “like-new” refurbished Dell D630 laptop! Congrats to Dave and thank you to all who helped Comprenew collect almost 6,000 pounds of electronics that day.

Comprenew is proud to be a resource to our community members and partners like Hope Network and Cascade Engineering. Kyle Shoemaker, Reclaim Director at Comprenew, sums it up best here:

ReGift or ReCycle Electronics Holiday Initiative Successful!

Comprenew provided free Community Electronics Recycling at 5 locations throughout Grand Rapids area from December 27, 2011 through January 5, 2012 diverting over 20,000 pounds of electronics from area landfills.

With the help of communities connected with the three churches listed below and Grand Rapids residents at our two e-Thrift stores and donation centers, Comprenew collected and processed 21,095 pounds of electronics over a 10 day period following Christmas. THANK YOU to all who participated!

- Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, 4865 Eleven Mile Road NE, Rockford

- Frontline Community Church, 4411 Plainfield NE, Grand Rapids

- Wyoming Park United Methodist Church, 2244 Porter SW, Wyoming
