Free Electronics Recycling in Zeeland – SATURDAY

ZEELAND – First Reformed Church of Zeeland is hosting a city-wide electronics and metal recycling day on Saturday, March 16^th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the church parking lot at 148 E. Central Ave. The event location is accessible off Lincoln Avenue. First Reformed again will be partnering with Comprenew of Grand Rapids. Comprenew (comprenew.org), a state-licensed Universal Waste Handler and certified R2 e-Recycler, kept more than 3.5 million pounds of e-waste out of landfills last year.

Two previous electronic recycling events at First Reformed Church generated more than 57,000 pounds of e-waste, which was more than enough to fill up a semi-trailer, a box truck and pickup truck. Both were among the largest single-day e-waste recycling events in West Michigan.

This year, First Reformed also will be accepting scrap metal. All funds generated from the e-waste and metal recycling will support community and youth missions.

All electronic devices – essentially anything with a cord or battery, including phones, radios, computers, printers, monitors, televisions and household appliances – will be accepted. Large appliances, such as a refrigerators or freezers, cannot be accepted. All scrap metal – old screen doors, aluminum siding, cast iron – also can be brought to the church.

Great effort from Greenville high school students here at Comprenew…many hours spent here disassembling OVER 125 computers and keeping e-Waste out of our landfills…truly appreciate all of you! Rumor has it that the students went home with electronic components and they will be creating works of art to display both here at Comprenew and at the school. Stay tuned!

Comprenew continues to make an effort to “get the word out” about electronics recycling and our friends at Clear Channel are part of that work. In particular, Larry Bush, Marketing Consultant for Clear Channel in Grand Rapids and Muskegon, has really helped us with our radio messaging recently connecting us with Dave Ramsey to endorse our organization. We begin our 3rd year working with him in 2013 and we truly value the relationship.

GVSU Rules!

Grand Valley State University sent 5 different volunteer groups to Comprenew on Saturday. Yes, FIVE! Over 80 GVSU students from the Alternative Breaks program, the Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service initiative, Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Sigma Phi, and Phi Sigma Sigma. Truly an awesome effort to support Comprenew and protect our environment by diverting electronics from our local landfills. The GVSU students worked from 9:30am – 3:30pm and, altogether, they disassembled over 325 personal computers, creating value out of obsolete technology and keeping “e-Waste” out of local landfills.

Their generous donation of their time support our efforts to provide responsible electronics recycling to the Grand Rapids community.

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. by Volunteering this Monday

A great day is coming to Comprenew this Monday to honor Dr. King!

Thank you in advance to the following organizations that are sending volunteers to assist us with keeping electronics out of local landfills. Volunteers will learn about e-Waste recycling and have hands-on opportunity to disassemble PCs and other electronics. The organizations are Aquinas College, Network 180, Americorps, and the Heart of West Michigan United Way.

Bethany Christian Service Refugee Employment Services “works” at Comprenew

As a nonprofit player in the highly competitive, low-margin electronics recycling industry, Comprenew depends heavily on its volunteer base to help recycle, restore and/or resell the large amount of recycled electronics it takes in weekly. An average week sees 75,000 pounds of “e-Waste” coming into the Comprenew facility and Comprenew’s mission has always included job training and assessment opportunities to those with a variety of barriers to employment. Comprenew serves numerous community agencies who seek good work environments to train their clients for re-entry to the workforce.

One such agency is Bethany Christian Services and, in particular, its Refugee Employment Services Program. In close collaboration with Bethany Christian Services, Comprenew is providing a valuable job training site and an opportunity for participants to sharpen their English skills in a real work environment. There are currently eight workers at Comprenew from this program working approximately 30 hours each week. These individuals are from Bhutan, Napal, Iraq, Guatemala, and Burma. Language challenges are a part of the day but, with patience and demonstration, Comprenew leaders have been able to make this program work. We highly value the participants and the support from Bethany Christian Services!
